Edmonton's Citadel Theatre Announces SeasonDrowsy Chaperone and Other Musicals Onstage in Edmonton 2009-2010
An outline of the upcoming theatre season at the Citadel in Edmonton, Alberta.
The Citadel Theatre, Edmonton’s largest theatre company, announced their upcoming season this morning. The results are not all surprising, as many of them are keeping with the tradition of the company, but there are a few standout gems to look for. Coming to the Citadel in 2009-2010The mainstage series opens with a visit from Vancouver Playhouse’s The Drowsy Chaperone, written by Bob Martin and Don McKellar (running September 5 to October 4, 2009.) Following quickly in its tracks is Rock n’ Roll by the legendary Tom Stoppard. It runs from November 7 to 29, 2009, and is described by the Citadel’s artistic director, Bob Baker, as a drama with amazing music from bands like Pink Floyd and The Velvet Underground. Opening up the New Year is another installment of Dan Needles’ Wingfield series, entitled Wingfield’s Lost and Found (January 9 to 31, 2010.) Followers of the series will be pleased with another chapter of this one-man comedy. Heads will roll (and much fun will be had) in February – February 6 to March 6, 2010, to be exact – when Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street arrives on the MacLab Theatre stage. Bob Baker directs Stephen Sondheim’s classic, which will no doubt be a big seller after its massive box office success on the silver screen. Another classic – Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie – comes to the Citadel from April 3 to 25, 2010, and in keeping with the tradition of doing one Shakespeare play per year, As You Like It will close the season from April 17 to May 9, 2010. The Rice Series Line-up for 2009-2010The Rice series, which puts focus on producing edgier, more underground works, opens up with a piece by Scottish playwright David Harrower, called Blackbird. The play, which deals with issues of child abuse and the guilt that follows such actions, runs from October 3 to 25, 2009. In co-production with Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre, Michael Healey’s Courageous is up next from February 20 to March 14, 2010. The work is a comedic look at just about every current urban issue and taboo, from gay marriage to religion and politics. Closing out the Rice series is the already successful Drowning Girls, by Beth Graham, Charlie Tomlinson, and Daniela Vlaskalic. Making another stop in Edmonton from March 27 to April 18, 2010, this play tells the story of a true villain from the 1900s and his female victims. Children’s Series Also Full of ClassicsAs always, there are options for the whole family in the 2009-2010 season at the Citadel. This season boasts The Jungle Book (October 17 to November 1, 2009), A Christmas Carol (November 27 to December 23, 2009), and a return of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast (May 1 to 30, 2010.)
